At one of the state’s largest and most competitive tournaments prior to the postseason, the Lake Travis girls golf team finished strong to claim second place overall Friday.
The Lady Cavaliers were in fourth after the first round but rallied to tie Allen for second, capturing second by virtue of a scorecard playoff at the 5A Girls Invitational, also known as the 5A state preview, at the Morris Williams Golf Course.
The Woodlands won the tournament with a 611, and Lake Travis was just off the lead at 612. Allen also had 612, and Westlake was fourth with 615.
Julia Beck led the Lady Cavaliers with a fifth-place finish individually with a 76-71 147. The other Lady Cavs and scores were Kristen Gillman 77-73 150, Emily Gillman 77-76 153, Courtney Ford 81-84 165, Ann Parmerter 87-81 168 and Veronica McGrail, who played a medalist and shot 85-94 179.
Individually the tournament medalist was determined by a six-hole playoff, won by Maddie Szeryk of Allen with 69-71 140, with Sierra Sims of Westlake taking second with 72-68 140.
Third went to Maggie Byers of Churchill with 72-73 145, fourth was Chaithra Katamneni of Coppell with 75-71 146, followed by Beck, as those five girls made up the all-tournament team.
On March 6, the Cavs JV squad took third place at the Cedar Creek Boys Invitational at the Wolfdancer Golf Course in Bastrop. The team results were Fredericksburg 315, Georgetown 318 and Lake Travis 320.
Medalist honors went to Jake Budde of Lake Travis with a sizzling round of 73, winning with a scorecard tiebreaker. The other Lake Travis players and scores were: Jacob Rodriguez 79, Nick Winborn 84, Jack Gist 84 and Logan Zavala 85.
