Karen Miller-Kopp, principal of Lake Travis Elementary School, has accepted the position of executive director for school improvement and professional development with Plainview school district.
“On behalf of the entire LTISD family, we congratulate Karen and thank her for her dedicated service and contributions to LTE and the Lake Travis community,” said Brad Lancaster, Lake Travis superintendent, in a statement. “We are excited for Karen and the many opportunities this promotion will create for her and her family.”
Plainview school district has an enrollment of approximately 5,800 students. In her new capacity, Miller-Kopp will work directly with principals to facilitate district-wide school improvement, support secondary level academics as central office liaison, and assist with the implementation of staff development for teachers and staff.
Miller-Kopp earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas State University. She is working on her dissertation toward a doctorate of philosophy degree in school improvement. After serving in the U.S. Air Force as a medical technician and disaster preparedness specialist, Miller-Kopp began her teaching career at Austin school district in 1997 where she taught pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. While at the Austin school diistrict, she also developed curriculum, assessments and interventions for students.
In 2006, Miller-Kopp joined Lake Travis school district as associate principal for curriculum and instruction at Lake Travis High School, and in 2008, was promoted to principal of Lake Travis Elementary School, then an academically acceptable-rated campus. In 2011, the campus received an exemplary rating.
Later that year, Lake Travis Elementary School was named a National Title I Distinguished School. The school was one of two campuses from the more than 6,000 Title I schools in the state selected for the prestigious recognition.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by the opportunities I have been afforded throughout my tenure at LTISD,” Miller-Kopp said. “LTE in particular will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Miller-Kopp is expected to begin her tenure with the Plainview school district in May. In the interim, Lake Travis ISD officials said they will begin a search for her replacement at Lake Travis Elementary.
