A command pitching performance from Shelby Sells and two big innings at the plate gave Pflugerville the early edge in the first round of 5A playoffs, as the Panthers beat Lake Travis 5-2 Friday.
Sells pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on two hits. She struck out 10 and walked two.
The offense came in bunches for the Panthers, as the team scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and two in the seventh.
Lake Travis took an early lead in the first inning when Allison Brascom scored from second when Pflugerville mishandled a Zoe Bacon line drive, giving the Lady Cavs a 1-0 advantage.
Pflugerville’s Brooke Berding jumped-started the Panther’s productive third inning with a solo home run. The Panthers then took advantage of two Lake Travis errors to put two more runs on the board. After reaching on walk, Danielle Nobles scored from second when a Casey Ingram double led to an errant throw. Nobles advanced to third on the miscue and was plated when the Lake Travis shortstop misfielded a Jade Jameson ground ball.
The Lady Cavs closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth. Lake Travis hitter Bacon sent a home run over the left-center field wall to bring the game to 3-2.
The Panthers responded with a home run of their own in the final inning. Nobles launched a two-out, two-run shot to put the game out of reach for the the Lady Cavs.
Lake Travis pitcher Bacon threw a complete game as well, giving up one earned run on eight hits. She struck out two and walked three.
Berding was the only Panther to register more than one hit, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
The Lady Cavs’ two hits came courtesy of Brascom and Bacon. Brascom was 1-for-3 with a double, while Bacon was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The two teams meet in the second game of the three game series Saturday at noon at Pflugerville, with a third game to follow thirty minutes after if necessary.

It was a good run but it is always going to be tough to win with one pitcher, especially when the players get the timing down and are hitting home runs and hard line drives to the gap. Bacon did good but she is still a young pitcher and not just one player carries the team. Good luck to all the girls and looking forward to the 2014 season.
