Willie Nelson’s concert at The Backyard in Bee Cave on April 28 will now benefit the West Volunteer Fire Department.
At least 14 people died, and many more were injured, when a fertilizer plant in the little Texas town exploded April 17, causing damage to many surrounding buildings.
“West is just a few miles from my hometown of Abbott,” Nelson said in a statement posted on his website. “I was born and raised here, and it was my backyard growing up. This is my community. These friends and neighbors have always been and are still a part of my life. My heart is praying for the community that we call home.”
The Willie Nelson and Family Show will also celebrate Nelson’s 80th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the outdoor amphitheater venue. The Backyard’s email newsletter, sent out Friday, celebrated fundraising efforts Nelson has spearheaded in the past.
“This show will be an opportunity for Texans to support Willie in this effort to aid his hometown in their time of need,” the newsletter states. “There will be more opportunities to contribute at the event. The event will also be attended by firefighters to help in these efforts.”
Backyard owner Tim O’Connor was unavailable for comment.
